Stop Blaming Victims

SO, after the tragic bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England, the Anti Islam/anti Muslim posts have already started showing up. Here are my 2 cents:

For the last 5 years I have worked 45 to 50 hours a week as a job counselor in Southern Idaho. About 30 to 40 percent of my clients have been Muslim refugees. They are some of the hardest working and best people that I know. They have suffered unimaginable horrors at the hands of terrorism. They have seen family members murdered. They have left everything behind. Many of them were professional people in their countries. I have worked with former Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, reporters, award winning photo journalists, jewelers, educators with advanced degrees, and more. Now they work as cashiers, janitors, farm hands, general laborers, etc (NOT that there is anything wrong with those careers) all day long, while studying English at night, in the hopes of just getting by and maybe regaining their former careers.

On top of all of what they have already suffered they face prejudice every day. Alex Jones just came to our town on an anti immigrant crusade. They get it from Trump, Faux News, and the right wing. But even WORSE, they see posts, news stories, and hear general conversations where they are compared to the very terrorists who turned their lives upside down. They are made responsible or are made to answer for the very terrorists that tortured and murdered their families and from whom they are fleeing from.

I know what True is Islam and who True Muslims are because I work with them every day. They are my clients, my neighbors, my friends and I love them. They love their families and their new homes and opportunities. They just want to live in peace. Everyone PLEASE Stop conflating Islam with terrorism. Mormons have murdered and massacred, Catholics have murdered and massacred, Protestants have murdered and massacred. Islam is NOT the enemy, Terrorists are the enemy

  1. Thanks for this. I also work with Muslims in Southern Idaho (albeit a couple hours east of where you are). Good people who deserve more respect than Southern Idaho gives them.
